On a recent holiday weekend down in Paso Robles wine country, we went to a charming little bistro for lunch where we re-discovered the most refreshing lunchtime cocktail – the White Linen Cocktail. This cocktail was created in a Sacramento saloon about 20 years ago, and became incredibly popular over a very short time.
The White Linen is a little citrusy, a little floral, and a perfect compliment to a sunny summer afternoon. It has a clean, crisp flavor. A great change for a ladies lunch, even if it’s a liquid lunch! If you haven’t had this before, or if it’s been a while since you did, try it again. You’re in for a real treat!
Pro tip: I suggest starting with just a bit of simple syrup, maybe one tablespoon, and add more to taste. I like it with just a hint of the sweet. And it is always easier to add more than take some away.
Also it is not an uncommon practice to offer the White Linen with Vodka rather than Gin for those who prefer Vodka! Try it both ways.
White Linen Cocktail – Ingredients
- 1.5 Ounces of Gin (one shot)
- .5 Ounce of Elderflower Liqueur
- 2 Tablespoons fresh Lemon Juice (about an ounce)
- Simple Syrup, to taste
- Cucumber slices, thinly sliced
- Soda Water, to fill
White Linen Cocktail – Preparation
Make the Simple Syrup by mixing equal parts of sugar and water over low heat on the stove until the sugar is dissolved. I usually use a quarter cup of each for 2-4 cocktails. You may wish to start with a half cup and adjust according to your taste.
Add ice to a tall cocktail shaker to half-full. Pour in the Gin, lemon juice, Elderflower Liqueur, a dash of simple syrup, to your taste. Add three cucumber slices to the shaker. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds or so. Pour through a double strainer into a glass filled with ice. Top with soda water.
Garnish with cucumber slices and a lemon slice. Enjoy!
