What to Do When Your Plant Suddenly Grows White Leaves

There are few things more startling in the garden than walking outside and discovering that a perfectly healthy-looking plant has suddenly produced completely white leaves. Not pale green. Not yellow. White.

And not green leaves that turned white, either. These leaves grew white.

At first glance, it can look like something is seriously wrong—and sometimes it is. Completely white leaves mean that the plant has little or no chlorophyll in the affected tissue, which means that part of the plant has lost much of its ability to photosynthesize. But before you start pulling out everything within a 10-foot radius, take a closer look. White leaves can have several different causes, and figuring out which one you are dealing with is the key to knowing what to do next.

I recently had exactly this happen in my own garden. One stem of a morning glory suddenly grew out completely white. At first I was concerned. (Hello Gloria Gaynor). The plant is growing right alongside my vegetable planting beds. My immediate thought was: Is something wrong with the soil? Is whatever is happening to this morning glory going to happen to my tomatoes?

Fortunately, completely white foliage doesn’t automatically mean that a problem is spreading through the garden.

What Plants Can Develop White Leaves?

Pretty much any plant can produce foliage with little or no chlorophyll, but the reasons can be very different.

You may see white foliage on vegetables, herbs, flowers, vines, fruit trees and ornamental plants. Sometimes it affects an entire plant. Sometimes it’s limited to one branch, one stem or even a handful of leaves. That distinction is important.

If every plant in a particular area suddenly develops pale or white foliage, I’d be much more suspicious of an environmental problem. If one plant develops a single white branch while everything around it looks perfectly normal, a genetic mutation becomes much more interesting.

We are all familiar with variegated plants that naturally produce white or cream-colored sections of foliage. And occasionally a normally green plant will spontaneously produce a somewhat variegated branch that looks different from the rest of the plant. But this seemed different – pure white leaves, white stem and successively smaller leaves.

Was this a problem? Or had the plant simply decided to get weird?

What Does a Pure White Leaf Actually Mean?

The green color in plants comes primarily from chlorophyll, the pigment that captures light energy for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process plants use to convert light energy into chemical energy, using carbon dioxide and water to produce sugars that fuel growth.

So when a leaf is completely white, something has happened to the tissue’s ability to produce or retain chlorophyll. And that matters.

A completely white leaf is essentially a leaf without its normal photosynthetic machinery. It may still look perfectly healthy for a while, but it isn’t contributing much energy to the plant. And it can’t produce food. In fact, often leaves that have no chlorophyll will be significantly smaller than the normal green leaves, because they have no food to grow.

This is why a small amount of white tissue isn’t necessarily catastrophic, while an entire plant covered in white leaves can be a serious problem. A plant can sometimes support a few non-photosynthetic leaves using energy produced elsewhere. But if the majority of its foliage is white, the plant may not be able to produce enough energy to sustain itself. That’s when you have a real problem.

First Question: Is It Actually White?

Before diagnosing anything, take a close look. There is a big difference between:

  • Completely white tissue
  • Pale green or yellowing leaves
  • White patches or streaks
  • Powdery white growth sitting on the surface
  • Bleached or damaged leaves

Powdery mildew, for example, can make leaves look white, but the white material is growing on the surface of the leaf. The underlying tissue is still green.

Sunscald, chemical injury, and other types of damage can also cause leaves to become pale or bleached looking. But generally this will be limited to where the sun hit the leaf, or where the chemical drifted in.

But if the leaf itself is white from the beginning as it emerges, that’s a different clue. And if the white tissue appears in a very specific pattern—particularly on only one branch—that’s another clue.

Not the Same as White From Lack of Light

Of course, not every white plant part has lost its chlorophyll because something is wrong with the plant. Gardeners intentionally use this principle all the time.

Think about leeks. As the stems grow underground, they are deliberately protected from light. Without light reaching the developing tissue, chlorophyll isn’t produced, leaving those portions white. The same basic principle is used when blanching vegetables such as celery. White asparagus and belgian endive also work similarly. Specialty growers harvest the edible white spears of asparagus while they are still underground, before exposure to sunlight allows them to develop their green color.

But that’s very different from what happened with my morning glory. My morning glory wasn’t growing underground or tucked beneath a pile of leaves. It was growing right on top of a trellis in full sunlight. That means lack of light wasn’t the explanation for the white stem.

If a plant is growing in full sun and its newly developing leaves emerge completely white, you’re looking at something happening within the plant itself. That is not simply the plant’s normal response to being kept in the dark.

Is It a Soil Problem?

This is probably where my mind went first when I discovered the white morning glory. After all, the plant was growing right next to my vegetable beds. If something was wrong with the soil, would it affect my tomatoes?

The good news is that a single plant or single branch developing white foliage is not usually evidence of a soil problem affecting the entire garden. Soil-related issues more commonly affect multiple plants, particularly plants growing under similar conditions.

If several different species in the same bed suddenly show unusual chlorosis or pale foliage, then it’s worth investigating the soil and growing conditions. For example, deficiencies in iron or magnesium can cause chlorosis and significant loss of green coloration. Other nutrient imbalances can produce similar symptoms, depending on the plant and the growing conditions.

But don’t start adding micronutrients just because a plant looks yellow or white. Plants need micronutrients in very small quantities. Adding something your soil doesn’t actually need can create an entirely new problem. Before adding iron, magnesium or other micronutrients, perform a soil test and use the results to guide your next step.

Think if anything has changed. For example, did you recently apply fertilizer, herbicide or another garden product? Has the bed been flooded or is it unusually dry? Are the plants experiencing root damage? Has the soil pH changed significantly? Are there signs of nutrient deficiency? A soil test can be useful if the problem is widespread or recurring.

But if you’ve got one otherwise healthy plant with one bizarre white stem, don’t immediately assume you’ve poisoned the garden. Sometimes plants just do weird things.

Or Is It a Genetic Mutation?

This is where things get interesting. Plants can develop spontaneous mutations, and sometimes those mutations affect chlorophyll production.

One particularly interesting possibility is a mutation occurring in the growing tip, or meristem, of a specific branch.

The meristem is essentially a region of actively dividing plant cells responsible for producing new growth. If a mutation occurs there and affects the plant’s ability to produce chlorophyll, or blocks the flow, that can be passed along to the cells that produce the future leaves on that particular stem.

The result can be remarkably strange: the original plant remains green, but everything produced from that particular growing point on becomes white.

You might see:

  • A completely white branch
  • Green and white leaves close to the meristem
  • White sections surrounded by normal green tissue
  • The farther away from the meristem, the leaves get whiter and smaller as the amount of chlorophyll supply diminishes

When the unusual growth is limited to one stem, while the rest of the plant remains perfectly healthy, genetics moves much higher on my list of possibilities.

That’s essentially what made my morning glory so interesting. One stem was white. The rest of the plant was green. The surrounding vegetables were green. There wasn’t a mysterious white-leaf epidemic marching through the garden.

What About Viruses?

Viruses can also cause unusual patterns of chlorosis, including mottling, streaking and areas of reduced chlorophyll. Look at the pattern. Does the plant have distorted new growth? Is the foliage mottled rather than uniformly white? Are leaves curling? Is the plant stunted? Are other plants of the same species developing similar symptoms?

If the answer is yes, you may have something more complicated going on.

A plant virus can be difficult to diagnose based on appearance alone, so if symptoms are spreading or affecting valuable plants, it’s worth contacting your local extension service or a plant diagnostic laboratory rather than guessing.

Could It Be Herbicide Damage?

If you use herbicides, another possibility is chemical injury. Some herbicides can cause dramatic changes in plant growth and coloration, particularly when plants are exposed unintentionally through drift or contamination.

If the white leaves appeared shortly after spraying somewhere nearby, or if multiple plants are showing unusual symptoms, investigate this possibility. Garden products can sometimes end up where they aren’t intended to go.

Consider reducing or stopping all use of herbicides – this is another good reason in addition to helping out the honeybees.

So, Can You Fix Completely White Leaves?

Sometimes.

If the problem is caused by a nutrient deficiency, environmental stress or another correctable growing condition, addressing the underlying problem may allow new growth to return to normal.

But if a branch has a genetic mutation that prevents it from producing chlorophyll, there may be nothing to “fix.” A completely white stem has very little ability to feed itself and will always be weak. But if the plant has plenty of healthy green foliage elsewhere, it will probably continue growing just fine. In some cases, you may want to remove a completely white branch if it is clearly not contributing to the plant’s health. Sometimes the new growth will come back normal if you are able to trim the plant above the point of the mutation.

And if you’re dealing with a desirable variegated plant, the situation is different again. The unusual foliage may actually be the feature you’re trying to preserve.

What Happened to My Morning Glory?

In my case, the white morning glory stem was fascinating precisely because it was so isolated.

One stem had turned completely white while the rest of the plant remained green. There was no obvious problem affecting the surrounding plants, and my tomatoes continued growing normally. My morning glory continued to thrive and produce blooms.

Sometimes the garden gives you a problem to solve.

Other times, it gives you something strange to observe.

And honestly, those can be some of the most interesting moments in gardening.

A completely white leaf is a reminder that plants are living organisms with surprisingly complicated genetics. They mutate. They respond to their environment. Sometimes they produce growth that doesn’t follow the usual rules.

Well, congratulations. Your garden may have just decided to conduct its own little genetics experiment.
