A Cozy Pear Cocktail for the Orchard Season 🍐

  • Save

This pear cocktail is one of those drinks that feels both elevated and easy—perfect for small gatherings, afternoons appetizers, or evenings when you want something just a little special without much effort. It’s lightly spiced, gently sweet, and balanced with the warmth of rum and the brightness of ginger. Served alongside something simple like herb flatbread, it turns into the kind of pairing that feels thoughtful without being fussy—fresh, seasonal, and just a bit indulgent.

Pears are the heart of this recipe, and choosing the right ones makes all the difference. Look for varieties that are ripe but are still easy to peel. Bosc pears are an excellent choice for their texture and warm, slightly honeyed flavor. Anjou pears work well too, offering a softer sweetness, while Bartlett pears can be used too. The goal is a rich, spoonable base that carries real pear flavor into the cocktail.

I make the pear compote ahead of time; earlier in the day or even a day prior. It will last up to 4 or 5 days in a sealed container in the fridge.

Pear Compote

Ingredients

  • 2 pears, peeled, cored, and diced
  • ¼ cup sugar (adjust based on sweetness of the pears)
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or fresh vanilla scraped from 1 pod
  • Dash of nutmeg
  • Splash of lemon juice

Instructions

In a small saucepan, combine the diced pears, sugar, water, cinnamon, and ginger. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. As the pears soften, they will release their juices and begin to break down.

Let the mixture cook for about 15–20 minutes, until the pears are tender and the liquid has thickened slightly. Your time will vary based upon how firm or soft your pears were. Stir in a small splash of lemon juice to brighten the flavor. Lightly mash the compote with the back of a spoon or blend briefly using an immersion blender. Let it cool completely before using in your cocktail.

Pear Cocktail

Ingredients (for 2 cocktails)

  • 2-3 tablespoons pear compote
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 2 shot Elderflower Liqueur (.75 ounce)
  • 1 Vanilla bean, halved and split (for garnish)
  • Ice

Instructions

In a cocktail shaker, add ice. Then add the pear compote, vodka, and Elderflower Liqueur. Shake or stir the pear with the ice and other ingredients to bring everything together.

Using a cocktail strainer, strain from the cocktail shaker directly into individual glasses. Old timey champagne glasses work great for this cocktail.

Finish with a light dusting of freshly grated nutmeg and the fresh vanilla bean for garnish.

A Simple Pour of the Season

This is the kind of cocktail that feels right at home in the orchard—layered, a little rustic, and full of seasonal flavor. It’s easy to make, easy to share, and pairs just as well with conversation as it does with good food. Whether you’re serving a few friends or just enjoying a quiet moment, it’s a small way to bring the harvest into your glass.
