What Are Nitrogen Fixing Crops?
Nitrogen fixing cover crops, are generally off-season plantings: in the fall after your garden is finished, or in the spring before you plant your spring vegetables. They are usually non-edible plants, but include edible beans and peas (legumes). Some can also be planted in the summer, interspersed between your crops. They can be planted in ground and are especially great planted in raised beds.
The biggest benefit comes when you cut the cover crop down once the plants start to bloom. A little before bloom is good too. This is when the nitrogen is at its peak in the plant. Once the plant has started developing seed the nitrogen levels decrease.
Snip the tops with a garden sheers or pair of clippers, and either allow it to rest on the top of your bed, or incorporate the green leaves into the top inch of the soil. Leave the roots of the cover crop intact in the soil, because much of the available nitrogen will be in the roots. You definitely want to cut the crop prior to the plants going to seed for the greatest benefit. If you live in a cold climate and your timing is excellent, you can allow cold-sensitive species to die naturally from frost.
In addition to the timing of cutting the crop, there is one other important tip. Don’t add a thick layer of mulch over freshly cut green cover crop or else you could create an anaerobic environment which could kill the benefit from the nitrogen.

- Nitrogen Fertilizer for a Quick Fix: A nitrogen fertilizer such as compressed alfalfa animal feed acts as a potent organic fertilizer. When watered, the pellets disintegrate and rapidly break down, releasing nitrogen, potassium, and a natural plant growth hormone called triacontanol. You get fast results, in a cheap, highly convenient form that requires zero waiting time for plants to grow. However, fertilizer does not fix root compaction or improve deep soil architecture. The nitrogen also breaks down more quickly.
- Nitrogen Fixing Crops for Long term Soil Improvement: A nitrogen fixing crop such as crimson clover, hairy vetch, or field peas partner with soil bacteria to pull nitrogen directly from the air and store it in their tissues. When cut down and allowed to decompose, they feed the soil web. This creates living roots that feed microbes, prevents erosion, adds long-lasting organic matter, and improves your overall soil. If your goal is multi-season soil remediation and improving physical soil structure, try nitrogen fixing crops.
Choosing Nitrogen-Fixing Crops
Not all legumes are equal in their nitrogen-fixing abilities, and the best choice often depends on your growing region and goals. Some germinate quickly, making them good for short windows. Some are great at breaking up the soil. There are some that have small footprints and can be interplanted with your regular summer crops. Generally the most potent nitrogen cover crops are crops that are not meant for consumption, with a few exceptions.
- Peas and Beans: (spring or fall planting) Ideal for kitchen gardens and raised beds, these familiar crops not only provide fresh produce but also contribute moderate nitrogen to the soil- usually less than some other crops. Bush beans in particular are efficient nitrogen fixers for summer gardens. Sweet peas have attractive blooms.
- Red Clover: (spring or fall planting) Often used as a cover crop, clover establishes quickly and adds substantial nitrogen while also improving soil structure.
- Vetch: (fall planting) A cold-tolerant cover crop that produces abundant biomass and is highly effective for fixing nitrogen before summer plantings.
- Fava Beans: (early spring or fall planting) Excellent for cool-season planting, favas provide both a harvestable crop and a significant nitrogen boost.

- Alyssum and white clover: (spring and summer planting!) Protect the soil and feed nutrients back to it. They can be planted around your edibles without out-competing them, and they have the added benefit of drawing in pollinators.
The Role of Inoculants
Nitrogen fixation can be variable, depending upon your soil composition. The right strain of rhizobia bacteria should be present in the soil to colonize the legume’s roots. In soils where legumes haven’t been grown recently, adding a commercial inoculant at planting ensures a healthy bacterial population.
These inoculants are crop-specific — the rhizobia that thrive with peas, for instance, may not effectively colonize beans. Proper inoculation often makes the difference between modest and outstanding nitrogen gains.
However you do NOT NEED to add an inoculant. Think of it like a booster. Even if you have not planted a nitrogen fixing cover crop before, your garden will still get some benefit, and each subsequent planting will provide more and more nitrogen to your soil.
How to Apply Inoculants
Applying inoculants is simple. Commercial inoculants usually come as a fine peat-based powder containing live rhizobia bacteria specific to your chosen legume. To apply, lightly moisten the seeds with water (some gardeners use a sugar-water solution to help the powder stick) and then dust them with the inoculant until they are evenly coated just before planting.
Because rhizobia are living organisms, inoculant should be stored in a cool, dry place and used before its expiration date. Avoid planting treated seeds in hot, dry soil, as the bacteria are sensitive to heat and desiccation. With proper application, the rhizobia quickly colonize the roots, forming nodules that become the engine of nitrogen fixation in your soil.
Timing and Rotation Strategies
Nitrogen-fixing crops are even more effective when integrated thoughtfully into your crop rotation:
- Preceding Heavy Feeders: Plant legumes before nitrogen-hungry crops like corn, brassicas, or tomatoes to ensure a rich nutrient base.
